The third installment of this blog’s “Teacher Features” is now here! This time, the spotlight is on Mwalimu Mshiu, whose first name I only learned after she had already left Toa.
You see, one does not call Mwalimu Mshiu by her first name. If you value your knuckles at all and want to avoid a good rapping, you will treat Mwalimu Mshiu with due respect!
Have fun with this one and don’t forget to read all the way to the end for Mwalimu Mshiu’s parting zinger – having just read this myself for the first time three years later, I am finding it pretty funny and in keeping with this powerful woman’s character. A proper Tanzanian mama, this teacher is one of the oldest and most revered I have ever worked with. Keep in mind that this was written in 2016 and that Mwalimu Mshiu left Toa shortly thereafter, on good terms, but I think now I know why!!
Etch-A-Sketch brings out a rare smile in Mwalimu Mshiu on the left while Hyasinta remains studious on the right.
I am a retired teacher, Terewiael Mshiu, aged 61.
Toa Nafasi imeanzishwa Shule ya Msingi Msaranga mwaka 2013 katika Manispaa ya Moshi.
Toa Nafasi was started in Msaranga Primary School in the year 2013 in Moshi Municipality.
Toa Nafasi was started under Teacher Sarah and Teacher Vumi who now has passed away.
Toa Nafasi is a project that deals with students who learn slowly.
From the start of this project, I was one of the people most concerned as I was teaching Grade One.
I cooperated with the tutors of the project when I was at work until 2015 when I retired.
After retirement I continued with the project until now.
Toa Nafasi can show big results for students who learn slowly and lift their standards of understanding until they finally continue well along with their peers.
The Toa Nafasi Project has helped students lift their standards of understanding together with investigating their health.
And when a child is diagnosed with health problems, Toa Nafasi is involved in helping with the cost of their treatment. From my personal side, this project can help to get needs met due to the allowances offered. Also, in the community the project can help parents of children with health problems and their treatment. [Here’s where Mwalimu Mshiu starts to get serious; you know it’s deep when the money talk starts!]
Challenges arising in the project are parents of children in the project who do not show sincere cooperation when needed.
Also, to tell the truth, salaries of tutors at Toa Nafasi are small. [ 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 ]
