At the start of each academic year, The Toa Nafasi Project assesses over 500 Standard One pupils across 4 schools in 3 wards in rural Kilimanjaro. By Spring, we are usually working with about 250 children who are under-performing and enrolled in our “pullout program.”
Each year, our staff takes upwards of 20 children to be treated for medical or psychosocial conditions that impaired their learning. We have relationships with Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre and other clinics and private practices in the area.
Additional students needing a self-enclosed classroom are often enrolled at the Gabriella Centre, and our current number of day students and boarders there is nearly 10 children.
Over the years, we have grown our Toa staff to a total of 12 tutors, 1 project leader, 1 local director, 1 grants manager, and 1 international director to carry out the services we aim to provide.
As we go forward, plans for expansion are in the works with our current goal being to have a Toa presence in each of the 21 wards in Moshi Municipal district. We cannot do this without your support. Adding more participating school sites will mean hiring and training more tutors, and setting aside more money for self-contained classroom students. We will also work to leverage funds to help the Tanzanian government to address the nationwide issue of classroom scarcity, and continue to increase Toa Nafasi’s organizational infrastructure and capacity-building.
