Welcome to another edition of Toa Nafasi’s “Teacher Features” where we shine a spotlight on one of our thirty tutors and hear from her in her own words.  This time, we meet Miss Imelda who I will admit, I had doubts about initially, but who has come a loooong way from when she joined us in 2016.  She is now a fave, both with her students and with her fellow staff, and she has recently been named the Head Tutor at our former home base, Msaranga Primary School.

So without further ado, meet Imelda!

(Remember these pieces are a bit outdated, so the info is old, but still relevant.  My translations in italics!)

Naitwa Imelda Mamertho Urio.

I am called Imelda Mamertho Urio.

I come from Arusha in a family of five children.  I am the second child and I am 21 years old.

I finished class seven in 2009 and continued with my studies in secondary finishing in 2013.  When I joined IDM college in 2014, I studied for a certificate but due to the situation of my parents, I didn’t finish and returned home.

Niliijua Toa Nafasi kupitia Mwalimu Temba.

I knew of Toa Nafasi through Teacher Temba.  She explained to me about The Toa Nafasi Project which helps disadvantaged children from its description.  I liked it and after this, I asked her if there was an opportunity for work, could she help me and then she helped me.

SMART goals for a particular child created include mastering 10 of 18 syllables through 6 of 9 exercises for a total of 80% success rate.

The whole community has been so well received by The Toa Nafasi Project.  I love very much The Toa Nafasi Project because it has helped me so much in my life since I had no work to do.  Also it has helped the children who did not know how to read or count to understand and to be consistent with the others in class.  Also the project is currently expanding as there was one station but now there are four stations.  I pray for Sarah to find the same heart to help us.
