Hello dear friends, and here’s hoping you are all as well as can be expected under the current circumstances.  We at Toa ( in our various corners of the world: Tanzania, Ireland, Washington DC, and California) are doing okay as we try to adjust to this new world in which we live and keep The Project running as best we can.

Schools in Tanzania closed in mid-March and we really have no idea when they will re-open.  It’s a pretty difficult scenario for an NGO that operates within the public primary school system!  However, we know we are not alone and we have faith that one day soon, we will be able to return to work.

Yet, even though classes are not in session and we can’t reach our vulnerable students, we can still continue to provide remote trainings and professional development to our staff, all of whom are Tanzanian nationals and most of whom are women.  But we need your help!

Please join us in participating in the worldwide fundraiser, #GivingTuesdayNow, to be held next week on Tuesday, May 5th during which we will raise money to protect our Tanzanian colleagues’ jobs and provide them training during this “great pause.”

A designated point person outfitted with PPE will be responsible for disseminating printed materials periodically to the tutors one by one as they continue to stay at home.  Sessions planned are the reading and discussion of articles via phone tree as well as workshops and virtual conversations conducted on FaceTime and Skype.  Now that the organization is operating under local leadership, it is more important than ever to keep the extraordinary people in whom Toa has invested employed and engaged.

The good folks at GivingTuesday, who organized this global day of giving geared specifically at COVID-19 relief, believe that “Generosity has the power to unite and heal communities in good times and bad.  A global threat like COVID-19 touches every person on the planet, and it presents an opportunity to come together as a global community.  #GivingTuesdayNow is a new global day of giving and unity that will take place on May 5, 2020 – in addition to the regularly scheduled December 1, 2020 #GivingTuesday – as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.”

Show your generosity by donating to The Toa Nafasi Project via the nonprofit fundraising platform Mightycause.  Some suggested donation amounts are below.  Please remember that Team Toa is BIG – 18 Tutors, 11 Head Tutors, Tutor Leader, Office Manager, Assistant Deputy Director, and Deputy Director!

$5 – one ream of paper for printing and copying materials

$10 – phone credit for one tutor for one month (also provides access to the internet)

$32 – one ink cartridge for printing and copying materials

$50 – one external modem

As always, we thank our friends and donors from the bottoms of our hearts and we hope for your continued safety and for a speedy end to our collective crisis.
